Unbeaten and nationally ranked Illinois Central kept the Carl Sandburg College volleyball team from extending its win streak to three matches, defeating the Chargers 25-19, 25-13, 25-23 on Monday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
Both of Sandburg’s losses this season have come against teams in this week’s national rankings — the third-ranked Cougars (9-0) and No. 19 Sauk Valley.
The Chargers (4-2) led for most of the third set, taking their largest lead at 15-9 after a 4-0 run that included a pair of aces from Carmyn Baldwin (Lewistown, Ill./Lewistown), who came in off the bench at the setter position. ICC answered with five straight points and eventually tied the set five times before grabbing its first lead at 23-22 on a Courtney Heffren kill as it took three of the final four points.
The Cougars jumped to early leads in the first two sets, going ahead 8-2 in the first and 13-5 in the second.
Freshman Gracie Rademaker (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) led the Chargers with nine kills, 16 digs and a pair of blocks. Carley Reeves-Eakins (Branson, Mo./Reeds Spring) had seven kills for Sandburg, and Jerzi Johnson (Monmouth, Ill./United) put down six.
Laney Chiaravalle (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) had 17 assists in the first two sets before Baldwin came in at setter to start the third and sparked the Chargers with seven assists. Baldwin also had a team-best two aces.
